Verse 1

Translation of Kanzul Iman: Extremely Blessed is He in Whose control is the entire kingdom. He has power over everything.

Explanation: This verse establishes Allah’s absolute sovereignty. He is not just the Creator but the supreme Owner of the entire universe, and His authority is flawless.

Verse 2

Translation of Kanzul Iman: He who created death and life so that you may be tested as to which of you is better in deed. He is the Mighty, the Forgiving.

Explanation: Some signs of the power of Allah are described here. Allah created both death and life. Death is the separation of the soul from the body. It is the loss of sensory power in humans and animals. Life is the presence of the soul in the body. Sensory power remains active during life. Creation means giving existence to something. This shows that death is a physical reality. Pure non-existence cannot be created.

Verse 3 & 4

Translation of Kanzul Iman: He created seven heavens, one above another. Do you see any inconsistency in the creation of the Most Gracious? Raise your eyes and look. Do you see any flaws? Then look again. Your sight will return to you, unsuccessful and exhausted.

Explanation: Allah created these seven heavens without any prior model. This shows His great power. Every heaven is above the other like a bow. The sky of this world is like a dome over the earth. The distance between each heaven is hundreds of years. O servant! You will find no flaw in the creation of Allah. You will find it strong and correct. Everything is balanced and proportional.

Verse 5

Translation of Kanzul Iman: And indeed, We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps. We made them missiles for the devils. We prepared for them the punishment of the blazing fire.

Explanation: Allah gave another proof of His power in this verse. He decorated the nearest heaven with stars. This heaven is closest to the earth. People can see these stars. He made these stars a means of striking the devils.

Verse 6

Translation of Kanzul Iman: And for those who disbelieve in their Lord is the punishment of Hell; and what an evil destination.

Explanation: The punishment of the blazing fire is not specifically for the devils alone. Rather, for anyone among humans and jinn who disbelieves in Allah, He has prepared the punishment of Hell. And what an evil abode it is! The place itself is painful, and its food and water are, too. Even the snakes and scorpions there are a source of distress, and the companions within it are tormentors. In short, every kind of suffering is gathered within it.

Verse 7

Translation of Kanzul Iman: When they are cast into it, they will hear it braying as it boils.

Explanation: From here, Allah Almighty describes the characteristics of Hell. Accordingly, the summary of this verse is that when those disbelievers are thrown into Hell, just as wood is thrown into a massive fire, they will hear the terrifying braying of Hell, similar to the sound of a donkey. At that time, Hell will be boiling just as water boils in a pot.

Verses 8, 9, 10, and 11

Translation of Kanzul Iman: It seems it will burst with intense rage; whenever a group is cast into it, its keepers will ask them, “Did no warner come to you?”

They will say, “Why not? Indeed, warners came to us, then we denied (them) and said, ‘Allah has sent down nothing; you are only in great error.’”

And they will say, “If we had listened or understood, we would not have been among the inhabitants of the blazing Fire.”

Now they have confessed their sin; so, may the inhabitants of Hell be cursed.

Explanation: Here, another characteristic of Hell is described: that Hell will be enraged at the disbelievers, and it will seem as if, due to the intensity of rage, Hell will burst at any moment and its parts will be separated from each other.

Verse 12

Translation of Kanzul Iman: Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen, for them is forgiveness and a great reward.

Explanation: After describing the punishment regarding the disbelievers, Allah Almighty mentions the promise for the believers here. Accordingly, it is stated that those who fear their Lord (Mighty and Majestic), even though they have not seen their Lord (Mighty and Majestic), and bring faith in Him while fearing His punishment, for them is forgiveness for their sins and a great reward (meaning Paradise) for their good deeds.

Verse 13 & 14

Translation of Kanzul Iman
: And whether you speak your words in secret or aloud, He surely knows what is in the hearts.

Would He not know Who created? And He is the One Who knows every subtlety, the All-Aware.

Explanation: Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states that the polytheists used to talk about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Hazrat Jibrail (peace be upon him) would convey their conversations to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon this, the polytheists said to each other, “Talk secretly so that the God of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) cannot hear.” At this, this verse was revealed, and they were told that this effort of theirs is useless because the Glory of Allah is such that He knows the thoughts of the heart even before they reach the tongue, so how could He not know the conversation carried out by your tongues?

Providing proof for the claim made in the previous verse, it is stated that the Lord Almighty, who has given existence to all things with His perfect wisdom, and your conversation held in a low or loud voice is also included among those things, so will He not have knowledge of your words? Whereas His Glory is such that He is the Knower of every subtlety, to the extent that He even sees the tracks of a black ant crawling on a solid rock in the dark night, and He is Aware of all hidden matters.

Verse 15

Translation of Kanzul Iman
: It is He Who made the earth subservient for you, so walk in its paths and eat of Allah’s provision, and to Him is the resurrection.

Explanation: In this verse, Allah Almighty describes two blessings He has bestowed upon His creation so that they may recognize His favor, express gratitude, and acknowledge the Oneness of Allah Almighty

Verse 16 & 17

Translation of Kanzul Iman
: Have you become fearless of Him whose sovereignty is in the heaven, that He should cause you to sink into the earth while it keeps shaking? Or have you become fearless of Him whose sovereignty is in the heaven, that He should send against you a shower of stones? So you will now know how my warning was.

Explanation: In this verse and the one following it, Allah Almighty warns the disbelievers of Makkah of His punishment, saying:

O disbelievers! By disobeying the Lord whose sovereignty is in the heavens, have you become fearless that He might cause you to be swallowed by the earth, just as He did to Qaroon, and keep the earth in motion until you reach its lowest depths?

Or, by disobeying the Lord whose sovereignty is in the heaven, have you become fearless that He might send a shower of stones upon you, just as He did to the people of Prophet Lut (peace be upon him)?

Then, upon seeing the punishment, you will soon know how My warning of punishment was.

Verse 18 & 19

Translation of Kanzul Iman: And indeed, those before them denied; so how (terrible) was My rejection? And have they not seen the birds above them, spreading their wings and folding them? None holds them up except the Most Gracious. Indeed, He sees everything.

Explanation: In this verse, Allah Almighty has comforted His Beloved (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and warned the disbelievers. Accordingly, He said: “O My beloved (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! If the disbelievers of Makkah deny you, do not be grieved because, before them, nations like the people of Hazrat Nuh (peace be upon him), the people of ‘Aad, and the people of Thamud, etc., had also denied My Messengers. So, when I destroyed them, how was my rejection then? That is, when they witnessed My punishment, they found it to be extremely severe.”

In this verse, Allah Almighty describes that which points toward His perfect power. Accordingly, He said: “Are the disbelievers of Makkah heedless? Have they not seen the birds flying above them, spreading and folding their wings? None holds them from falling during the states of spreading and folding except the Most Gracious (Mighty and Majestic).

Even though birds have heavy bodies and, naturally, heavy objects tend to fall, it is the power of Allah that keeps them aloft. Just as Allah has suspended the birds in the atmosphere, He keeps the heavens held up as long as He wills; if He did not hold them, the heavens would fall. Indeed, He is watching everything, and nothing is hidden from Him.”

Verse 20 & 21

Translation of Kanzul Iman: Or who is this that could be an army for you to help you against the Most Gracious? The disbelievers are only in delusion. Or who is it that can provide for you if He withholds His provision? Rather, they persist in rebellion and aversion.

Explanation: The disbelievers of Makkah used to take pride in two things while refusing to accept faith and maintaining enmity with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
Financial and numerical strength.
Their belief that these idols bring them benefits and ward off harm.
In this verse, Allah Almighty refutes the first point, saying: “O disbelievers! If Allah Almighty wills to afflict you with punishment, who is this army of yours that will help you against the Most Gracious and remove His punishment from you? You have no helper, and the disbelievers are only under the deception of Satan that punishment will not descend upon them.”

In this verse, the second point is refuted, as it is stated: “O disbelievers! If Allah Almighty withholds the provision He has given you and its means (such as rain or sunlight, etc.), then who is there to feed you, give you drink, and deliver your nourishment to you?”

The state of these disbelievers is that they have not taken any effect from this advice nor believed in it; rather, they have become stubborn in rebellion and hatred, which is why they do not come close to the truth.

Verses 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26

Translation of Kanzul Iman: Is he then, who walks fallen on his face, more on the (right) path, or he who walks upright on a straight path?

Say you, “It is He Who has produced you, and made for you ears and eyes and hearts. How little thanks you give!”

Say you, “It is He Who has spread you in the earth, and unto Him you shall be gathered.”

And they say, “When will this promise come, if you are truthful?”

Say you, “Its knowledge is only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner.”

Verses 27, 28, 29, and 30

So when they see it near, the faces of the disbelievers will be distorted, and it will be said, “This is what you used to call for.”

Say you, “Tell me, if Allah destroys me and those with me or has mercy on us, then who is he who will protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?”

Say you, “He is the Most Gracious; we have believed in Him, and in Him we have put our trust; so soon you will know who is in manifest error.”

Say you, “Tell me, if your water should sink into the earth in the morning, then who is it that will bring you flowing, clear water?”

Surah Mulk Arabic with English Translation

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

For readers in the subcontinent, Kanz-ul-Iman (by Imam Ahmad Raza Khan) and its accompanying Tafsir, Kanz-ul-Irfan, are considered among the most authentic, respectful, and widely accepted Urdu translations of the Holy Quran. They beautifully capture the true essence and profound reverence of the divine message.

Roman English (or transliteration) is a great starting point for absolute beginners who cannot yet read the Arabic script. However, it should only be used as a temporary learning tool. The English alphabet cannot accurately capture the phonetic sounds of Arabic, which can unintentionally alter word meaning. It is highly recommended to learn the proper Arabic script gradually.

Reading the Arabic text and reading the translation offer two different types of immense rewards. According to Hadith, reciting the original Arabic text grants you ten good deeds (Hasanat) for every single letter. On the other hand, reading the translation fulfills the divine command of Tadabbur (pondering over the Quran). Understanding the message transforms your character and strengthens your faith, which is the ultimate goal of recitation.

Reading the translation helps you understand Allah’s message. It refreshes your faith and increases your desire to do good deeds.
