Protection in Grave Surah Mulk Benefits

Top Benefits of Reciting Surah Al-Mulk

The Ahadith (sayings of the Prophet ﷺ) mention numerous virtues of Surah Al-Mulk, and some of them are as follows:

Protection from the Grave

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them both) states that a Companion (May Allah be pleased with him) pitched his tent in a place where there was a grave, and he did not know that a grave was there. Suddenly, he realized that it was a grave, and a man inside it was reciting Surah Al-Mulk until he had completed the entire Surah.

When that Companion (May Allah be pleased with him) presented himself before the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), he submitted: “O Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him)! I unknowingly pitched my tent on a grave. Suddenly, I realized it was a grave and a man inside it was reciting Surah Al-Mulk until he completed the Surah.”

The King of Prophethood (Peace Be Upon Him) stated: “This Surah is the preventer of the punishment of the grave, and it is the savior from it.” (Tirmidhi: 2899)

Intercession for Forgiveness

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) stated: “There is a Surah in the Holy Quran consisting of thirty verses that will intercede for its reciter until he is forgiven. That Surah is ‘Tabarakallazi Biyadihil Mulk’.” (Abu Dawud: 1400)

The Path to Paradise

Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (May Allah be pleased with him) states: “Surah Tabarak will argue on behalf of its reciter until it admits him into Paradise.” (Shu’ab al-Iman: 2508)

Rewards and Protection at Bedtime

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them both) that the Radiant Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) stated: “Indeed, I find a Surah in the Book of Allah which has thirty verses. Whoever recites it at bedtime, thirty good deeds will be written for him, his thirty sins will be erased, and his ranks will be elevated by thirty degrees.

And Allah Almighty sends one of the angels to him who spreads his wings over him, and protects him from everything until the man wakes up. That Surah is ‘Mujadilah’ (meaning the one that argues), which argues in the grave for its reciter, and that Surah is ‘Tabarakallazi Biyadihil Mulk’.” (Musnad al-Firdaws: 179)

Themes of Surah Al-Mulk

The central theme of this Surah is that it explains the fundamental beliefs of Islam—such as the Oneness of Allah Almighty, the Prophethood of the Radiant Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), the truthfulness of the Quran, resurrection, and the reward and punishment for deeds on the Day of Judgment—in a highly effective manner. Furthermore, the following themes have been described in this Surah:

  • At the beginning of this Surah, the greatness, sovereignty, and power of Allah Almighty are described, and it is stated that the purpose of creating life and death is to test the deeds of people.
  • The signs of Allah Almighty’s power are described: He created seven heavens one above the other without any prior example, and there is no flaw of any kind in these heavens. He adorned them with stars, and through these stars, the devils who try to ascend towards the sky are struck. Also, among the signs of His power is that He has prepared the painful punishment of Hell for the disbelievers and has given the believers glad tidings of forgiveness and a great reward.
  • It is stated that Allah Almighty knows everything manifest and hidden, open and concealed.
  • The blessings which Allah Almighty has bestowed upon His creation are described so that they may recognize His blessings, express gratitude to Him, and acknowledge the Oneness of Allah Almighty.
  • The disbelievers of Makkah are warned of the punishment of Allah Almighty, and the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) is comforted not to be grieved by their denial, because the disbelievers before them treated their Prophets (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Them) in the same manner.
  • At the end of this Surah, to clarify the condition of the believer and the disbeliever, an example of one walking upside down and one walking upright is given, and those who deny the Radiant Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) are warned of the punishment of Allah Almighty.
